Specific Information
History: Mischief, J/24 hull #2570, was built in 1981 and tuned extensively by Dave Curtis of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Curtis faired the hull, keel, and rudder, and established the layout of deck hardware. Curtis was really the first individual to figure out how to "trick out" a J/24 (mast aft, keel forward, etc), and Mischief benefited from many of his tuning breakthroughs. Curtis sailed her to a second place finish in the 1982 Mid-Winters. The previous owner brought Mischief to Annapolis in 1994, where she continued to race annually through 1999. The current owner purchased Mischief in 1998 and immediately outfitted her with a new set of Quantum racing sails, enlisting the help of J/24 World Champion Terry Hutchinson (who was working at Quantum Annapolis at the time) to tune and tweak the rig. The owner recently had the trailer reconditioned and moved the boat from Annapolis to Tampa where he intends to race her with the Davis Island fleet.
General Condition: Mischief has the "later model" hatches and no vermiculite in the sump. She has never had a hard grounding or suffered a serious collision. She has been dry sailed every year since 1981, except for two seasons during the early 1990's in Marblehead spent on a mooring. After Mischief came to Annapolis in 1994, Muller Marine removed her bottom paint and replaced it with Awlgrip epoxy primer, which has been extensively wet-sanded. Whenever deck hardware has been removed or relocated, the holes have always been professionally filled. The hull and deck are considered in good, dry condition, especially for a 1981 model. The previous and current owners have regularly upgraded equipment since bringing Mischief to Annapolis. The current owner outfitted Mischief with a new genoa and spinnaker for the 1998 racing season, and subsequently finished 6th of 24 boats in the J-World Thursday Evening Series. The owner recently had the trailer reconditioned, replacing the brakes, electronics, bearings, and tires.
Hull and Deck: The hull, keel, and rudder were faired by Dave Curtis in the mid-1980's. Muller Marine removed the bottom paint in 1994 and replaced it with Awlgrip epoxy, which has been extensively wet-sanded. The topsides were professionally painted with Imron #508 in 1997, and the teak was refinished with Sikkens Cetol Marine in that same year.
